The Monterey Pantry PickUp was started in 2020 by a few Monterey residents who recognized the need to improve access to food and basic necessities for many in our community.  At that time, the restrictions and supply disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic created a sense of urgency to address an already important need.  The Monterey United Church of Christ generously offered space and facilities in their historic building in the center of Monterey village.  Arrangements were made with food banks and commercial outlets to supply produce, meat, and other essentials on a weekly basis, and volunteers from the community came forward to pick up food from providers. pack and distribute boxed shares to clients every Saturday, and remove trash and compost. The community also responded with donations of food and money to augment what could be provided to clients.

 

Over time, the pandemic receded but the need has continued unabated.  The Pantry continues to receive inquiries from those in need of assistance, and its success has attracted a growing team of volunteers and supporters wanting to help meet this continuing need.  Even so, capacity limitations currently require us to limit our service area to three towns that otherwise lack comparable resources.  In 2024, the Pantry officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. We look forward to continuing to serve our community and, as resources and volunteers permit, expand to meet a growing need.
